Training
Six guided drills, run from the referee desk's Training screen or with /vbtrain at a court. A coach walks the player through one skill a step at a time, on the court they are standing on, and then drops them into a short match against the AI.
/vbtrain [movement | passing | setting | serving | spiking | blocking]
No argument starts movement. Typing it again stops the lesson you are in.
The block key only exists in the blocking drill. There is no block in a rally, so H does nothing on a live court. It is a separate key from the hit for the same reason the spike is: a block is a commitment, not a flavour of a hit.
The six lessons
| Lesson | What it drills | The three stars |
|---|---|---|
| Basic movement | Moving efficiently around the court: the four court-relative directions, sprinting, and getting under a ball | Complete every drill the coach calls · sprint left, then right, then in at the net · take the feeder's ball on your first swing |
| Passing | Ball control and accurate passes, fed around your back half and played through your partner's hands | Complete the drill · put ten passes onto your partner · finish it without shanking a ball |
| Setting | Hand position and timing: balls onto the setter's spot, delivered where the hitter can attack them | Complete the drill · deliver ten hittable sets in a row · finish it without setting into the net |
| Serving | A consistent, powerful serve: the real serve minigame, drilled | Complete the drill · land a power, a float and a static serve · serve five straight into the open court |
| Spiking | Attack angles and power, with a blocker in front of you | Complete the drill · attack with the blocker in front of you · score five points past the blocker |
| Blocking | Timing your jump and sealing the net, on H | Complete the drill · block five balls in a row · finish it without touching the net |
Stars
The stars are per lesson and only ever rise. A retake that goes worse never costs a star somebody already earned, so there is no reason not to try a harder objective.
Nothing a lesson does is scored. A drill runs inside a real match record flagged as practice, so the rules are relaxed on purpose: touch the ball from anywhere, as often as you like, without winning a serve, and it ends by freeing the seat rather than through the path that records a result. No leaderboard row and no profile record is ever written for a lesson.
The match at the end
Each lesson finishes with a short practice match against the AI so the skill lands somewhere real. Its rules are configurable separately from real matches under Config.Training: 5 points, win by 1 and no cap as shipped. Like the drills, it is not ranked.
Two lessons can refuse a court
Setting and spiking are both graded through the attack test, so they need a court that can actually produce an attack. A court whose net is at or above 2.90 m, or one too shallow to have a setter's zone at all, is refused with a message saying which, rather than running to the end and grading every ball as the player's failure.
The other four run on anything the builder can author.
